Chevrolet Traverse Oil Change Guide

In order to change the oil in your Chevrolet Traverse, you can follow these basic steps. If you feel like performing your oil change at home is too time consuming, you can always schedule an appointment at our service center near Woodland.

Step 1: Jack and Open Undertray

The first thing you’ll need to do is lift your vehicle high enough that you have space to work under it. You can use a hoist, ramps, or jack stands, but it’s vital to ensure you are being absolutely safe. Never work under a car if it is held up by a floor jack alone.

Step 2: Unplug and Drain the Oil Reserve

Whether you have a five-gallon bucket or oil drain pan (available in oil change kits or alone at most auto parts stores), place it in a position where oil will drain into it and not on the ground. Keep in mind: there will be a lot of oil. Simply remove the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise with the proper wrench and unscrewing it. Keep a solid hold on the drain plug while you are removing it. As soon as you pull it away from the pan, the oil will start draining. Allow the oil to drain until the flow has slowed to a trickle.

Step 3: Take the Old Filter Off

Next you’ll want to take the old filter off with an oil-filter wrench and turn it counterclockwise. More oil will pour out as you’re doing this, so move slowly and keep your oil pan underneath the filter. Before you install a new filter, take the time to verify that the old oil-filter gasket, shaped like a rubber ring, wasn’t left behind. It’s good practice to use an old rag to wipe down any remaining oil.

Step 4: Replace Drain Plug & Oil Filter

After that, you’ll want to replace the drain plug, tightening it until it’s snug, but be careful not to tighten it too much. Overtightening can cause damage. Next, take your new oil filter and apply a light coating of oil. You can do this with your finger, around the edge of the rubber gasket on the top of the filter. Again, screw this into place, but not too tightly.

Step 5: Refill with Oil

Once you are done replacing the oil filter and drain plug, replace the undertray and put the car back on the ground. Using a funnel, refill the engine with the manufacturer’s indicated volume and type of oil. After a few minutes a good idea to ensure that there are no leaks or
